In choosing a school parents naturally want to know as much as possible about the program. Our goal at Walden School, through our parent tours and conversations with you, is to help you understand what progressive, developmental education is all about.
At Walden, children are taught the tools of traditional scholarship—language and math skills, scientific concepts, geographic and historical perspectives, introductions to music and to the arts. But academic excellence is not an isolated goal. We strive to fix ideas in understanding, rather than words in memory. The Walden philosophy also recognizes that academic excellence lacks context without human insight.
Children and teachers work together to see the inter-relatedness of all they learn and of the relationship among people and the earth. We accomplish this by encouraging child-led inquiry, by developing conversation and conflict-resolution skills, and by nurturing the children’s love of learning and shared discovery. We expect that the children be active agents of their own learning by pursuing their own questions and consistently providing them with hands-on experiences in class and on field trips. As a result, our children value their learning, the importance of hard work and strive to give their best as learner and friend.
Your visit to Walden will take you into the classrooms. You will have the opportunity to talk with the Director, the teachers and students. We welcome your interest in our school.
